    1. This book is very self-indulgent, but the authors admit that right up front. Basically, they cover the careers and biographies of their favorite American "roots rock" or "altuntry" artists, and then pontificate on what makes them special. For what it is, it's not bad, it just never moves past being what it is. 2. This is an idiosyncratic collection, but it certainly has merit. A fine candidate for the music lover at the beach.
