    1. An epic, rich narrative that narrates the tale of an extended Gowda family in Kanooru, somewhere in the Malenadu region of (what is now) Karnataka. This book is set in the 1930s and is an accurate but fascinating record of the lives of people in that region. At the center of village life is the house of the land owning Gowda (of the shurda Vokkaliga caste) surrounded by his fields and the hovels and tents of his bonded labourers. Agriculture is the mainstay, and everybody's lives are tuned to the [...]

    5. My first introduction to Kannada literature was exemplary, needless to say.The author has captured pre-independence India very vividly, particularly rural India. Urban India with its idealised youth flit sufficiently in and out to leave us with a flavour of the times. The author has succeeded in writing a book where multiple characters can stake claims to being the protagonist because they are all developed equally well and have sufficient word share. Even the minor characters, minor to the exte [...]

    6. Kanooru Heggadati is not a book. It's an experience. The vibrancy with which the characters and their sorroundings present themselves is absolutely mind blowing!! A must read

    7. Based around the Kanooru family, two brothers and their love for a girl. The ancestral property which plays as the stage for all that transcribes through a period of 10 years. The seasons change, the people age and children grow up and marry, but some of the smaller things in life such as family, love and respect stay on forever!More here - vectorgaming/2014/

    8. Best piece of writing from Kuvempu. The descriptions that he makes of the surrounding is genious. The thoughts of an ideal man (Hoovayya), when it clashes with wordly affairs has been depicted beautifully. In some ways may be Hoovayya is Kuvempu's self portrait.A second read after so many years, could show even how I was influenced by the idealism of Hoovayya. This book sure had planted atleast few ideas in my life.

    9. Its such masterpiece, seems like you are really part of someone's life. Includes such intricate details of surroundings, situations and the life of Malenadu. Truly a Kuvempu masterpiece.

    10. The last time I felt like this was when I was reading "Twenty thousand leagues under the sea". It felt like I was walking among the characters. Beautiful writing.
