    1. I guess I just don't get Anne Tyler (I left The Accidental Tourist mid-stream). While I enjoy her comfortable breezy style and wacky humor, I find this book just okay, and sometimes uncomfortable reading. I'm sure it says something about me -- her healthy and accepting view of certain dysfunction makes me squirm, and her work doesn't seem strong enough to warrant it. It's a shade under 3, so 2, I guess, although I waver too much about this.

    2. I have read now about 8-10 books from Anne Tyler, and I'm starting to have problems separating them in my memory. One thing is sure, they are all very well written, the main character is a middle aged woman, and they all leave me in a melancholic mood.

    3. My two favorite Anne Tyler books are in this compilation: Dinner at the Homesick Restaurant and The Accidental Tourist. I always wondered why she won the Pulitzer Prize for Breathing Lessons and not one of the other two. Interestingly, I read Dinner at the Homesick Restaurant at 19 and didn't like it. After reading all of Tyler's books later in life, I decided to try it again and absolutely loved it.

    4. The dysfunctional family troubles me. The book reads easily, but I'm not comfortable with the melancholy left behind. Although there are some similarities to Janet Walls' Glass Castle, "Dinner" lacks the hope of even a single "normal" person.

    5. Don't know how I ever missed reading this. Her character descriptions are so amazing. She is able to capture the personality quirks and lives of so many otherwise left out people. I have always loved her writing. You can't beat a novel by Anne Tyler.

    6. 30 (!) years later, so glad I re-read this brilliant novel. It holds up well and certainly has a different relevance for me at this point in my life. Great writing, a profound saga about the realities of family life and life itself.

    7. This book reminded me so much of my own family that it was scary! Wonderful characters who portrayed their own approach to the life that had been given them. We are all fearfully and wonderfully made and we, each, deal with our life in a unique but similar manner as our parents did.

    8. Was my introduction to Anne Tyler. The start of a long love affair with her novels. Something about her direct, simple lives that become real to me. I love the crazy normalcy of her tales and the setting is familiar. Can't get enough of Anne Tyler.
